Boudoir
Boudoir by Vivienne Westwood is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1998 in the designer price tier. It opens with aldehydes, bergamot and coriander, moves into jasmine, rose, orange blossom and narcissus and dries down to sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli and civet. Expect around 9 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
Heart
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Narcissus Green, hay-like and slightly animalic. Strange and beautiful.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Civet Sharp, faecal and intense on its own. In trace amounts it makes florals glow.
