Tabu
Tabu by Dana is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1932 in the budget price tier. It opens with coriander, bergamot and orange blossom, moves into narcissus, jasmine, ylang-ylang and carnation and dries down to patchouli, vanilla, benzoin, musk and civet. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
Heart
- Narcissus Green, hay-like and slightly animalic. Strange and beautiful.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Carnation Spicy, clove-like floral. Old-school and a bit peppery.
Dry-down
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Civet Sharp, faecal and intense on its own. In trace amounts it makes florals glow.
