A Midsummer Dream
A Midsummer Dream by Roja Parfums is an unisex parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with aldehydes, lemon, bergamot, grapefruit and mandarin, moves into cyclamen, geranium, rose de mai, orange blossom and magnolia and dries down to rhubarb, cardamom, elemi, pink pepper, patchouli and oakmoss. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
Heart
- Cyclamen Watery, green and airy. Used to make florals feel light.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Rose de Mai Softer, honeyed May rose. Expensive and unmistakably natural.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Magnolia Lemony white floral. Bright and clean rather than heavy.
Dry-down
- Rhubarb Tart, pink and green at once. Sour fruit with a stalky edge.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Elemi Peppery resin with a lemon-pine lift. Bright and dry.
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
