Eau de Rochas
Eau de Rochas by Rochas is a feminine-leaning eau de toilette from 1970 in the designer price tier. It opens with lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, lemon verbena and basil, moves into jasmine, rose, narcissus and coriander and dries down to oakmoss, sandalwood, patchouli and amber. Expect around 4 hours of wear, and it projects softly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Lemon Verbena Lemon crossed with crushed herbs. Smells like expensive soap.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
Heart
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Narcissus Green, hay-like and slightly animalic. Strange and beautiful.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
