Safari
Safari by Ralph Lauren is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1990 in the designer price tier. It opens with galbanum, mandarin and aldehydes, moves into jasmine, narcissus, damask rose and orange blossom and dries down to oakmoss, sandalwood, vetiver and amber. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Galbanum Intensely green resin. Smells like snapping a plant stem in half.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
Heart
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Narcissus Green, hay-like and slightly animalic. Strange and beautiful.
- Damask Rose The rich, jammy, honeyed rose. Deep and slightly wine-like.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
