Calandre
Calandre by Paco Rabanne is a feminine-leaning eau de toilette from 1969 in the designer price tier. It opens with aldehydes, bergamot and galbanum, moves into rose, lily of the valley, jasmine and geranium and dries down to vetiver, oakmoss, sandalwood and musk. Expect around 6 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Galbanum Intensely green resin. Smells like snapping a plant stem in half.
Heart
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Lily of the Valley Clean, green, dewy floral. Reads as 'fresh laundry' to most people.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
Dry-down
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
