Polo Sport
Polo Sport by Ralph Lauren is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1994 in the designer price tier. It opens with lemon, mint and grapefruit, moves into sage, juniper berry and geranium and dries down to white musk, sandalwood and oakmoss. Expect around 5 hours of wear, and it projects softly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Mint Cold and tingly. Great in small doses, toothpaste in large ones.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
Heart
- Sage Dry, herbal and slightly bitter. Adds a grown-up, aromatic edge.
- Juniper Berry Gin, basically. Piney, dry and bracing.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
Dry-down
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
