Polo
Polo by Ralph Lauren is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1978 in the budget price tier. It opens with basil, juniper berry and bergamot, moves into pine, geranium and carnation and dries down to tobacco, oakmoss, patchouli and leather. Expect around 9 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Juniper Berry Gin, basically. Piney, dry and bracing.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
Heart
- Pine Sappy and bracing. Straightforwardly outdoorsy.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Carnation Spicy, clove-like floral. Old-school and a bit peppery.
Dry-down
- Tobacco Sweet, dried and honeyed. Nothing like a cigarette.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
