Gentleman
Gentleman by Givenchy is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1974 in the designer price tier. It opens with bergamot, lemon, cinnamon and tarragon, moves into patchouli, rose, iris and honey and dries down to leather, tobacco, oakmoss, sandalwood and vetiver. Expect around 9 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Tarragon Anise-tinged and green. Adds a herbal lift to barbershop scents.
Heart
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
- Honey Sweet, waxy and slightly animalic. Can smell dirty in large doses.
Dry-down
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Tobacco Sweet, dried and honeyed. Nothing like a cigarette.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
