Z-14
Z-14 by Halston is a masculine-leaning eau de cologne from 1976 in the budget price tier. It opens with lemon, bergamot and clary sage, moves into carnation, cinnamon and jasmine and dries down to oakmoss, leather, amber and patchouli. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Clary Sage Softer, sweeter sage with an ambery undertone. Warm and herbal.
Heart
- Carnation Spicy, clove-like floral. Old-school and a bit peppery.
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
