Tyrannosaurus Rex
Tyrannosaurus Rex by Zoologist is an unisex extrait de parfum from 2018 in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, black pepper, pine, bay leaf, neroli and nutmeg, moves into champaca, geranium, jasmine, osmanthus, rose and ylang-ylang and dries down to tar, leather, civet, frankincense, patchouli and sandalwood. Expect around 12 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Pine Sappy and bracing. Straightforwardly outdoorsy.
- Bay Leaf Warm, aromatic and slightly sweet. The backbone of classic barbershop scents.
- Neroli Distilled orange blossom. Green, soapy and elegant.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
Heart
- Champaca Warm magnolia relative — tea-like, fruity and slightly waxy.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Osmanthus Apricot-and-leather floral. Unusual, warm and very wearable.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
Dry-down
- Tar Black, rubbery and industrial. Uncompromising.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Civet Sharp, faecal and intense on its own. In trace amounts it makes florals glow.
- Frankincense Bright, peppery, church-like resin. Lifts and cools a fragrance.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
