Diaghilev
Diaghilev by Roja Parfums is an unisex parfum from 2011 in the luxury price tier. It opens with lemon, bergamot, lime, sweet orange and tarragon, moves into rose de mai, jasmine, tuberose, ylang-ylang, violet and peach and dries down to patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood, leather and civet. Expect around 12 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lime Sharper and greener than lemon. Reads a bit tropical, a bit barbershop.
- Sweet Orange Juicy and cheerful. The friendliest citrus there is.
- Tarragon Anise-tinged and green. Adds a herbal lift to barbershop scents.
Heart
- Rose de Mai Softer, honeyed May rose. Expensive and unmistakably natural.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Tuberose Creamy, waxy and enormous. The loudest white flower.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Peach Fuzzy, warm and slightly creamy. Soft rather than sharp.
Dry-down
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Civet Sharp, faecal and intense on its own. In trace amounts it makes florals glow.
