Opium Pour Homme
Opium Pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1995 in the designer price tier. It opens with blackcurrant, star anise, mandarin and lavender, moves into black pepper, ginger and geranium and dries down to atlas cedar, patchouli, vanilla and amber. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Blackcurrant Tart, dark and slightly catty. Adds bite to florals.
- Star Anise Liquorice-like and cool. Sweet but not sugary.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
Heart
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
Dry-down
- Atlas Cedar Smoother, resinous cedar. Warmer than the Virginia type.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
