Tempest
Tempest by Xerjoff is an unisex parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with bergamot, sweet orange, lavender, elemi, ginger and lemon, moves into amberwood, bulgarian rose, atlas cedar, cypriol, gurjun balsam and sambac jasmine and dries down to amber, sandalwood, haitian vetiver, musk and patchouli. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Sweet Orange Juicy and cheerful. The friendliest citrus there is.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
- Elemi Peppery resin with a lemon-pine lift. Bright and dry.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
Heart
- Amberwood Dry synthetic warmth, sharper than amber. Everywhere in modern masculines.
- Bulgarian Rose Fresh, dewy and green. The 'real rose garden' version.
- Atlas Cedar Smoother, resinous cedar. Warmer than the Virginia type.
- Cypriol Also called nagarmotha. Smoky, leathery, earthy — a vetiver relative.
- Gurjun Balsam A woody resin from Southeast Asia. Smooth, faintly peppery, and it helps a scent last.
- Sambac Jasmine Greener, more tea-like jasmine. Less indolic than grandiflorum.
Dry-down
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Haitian Vetiver Cleaner, smokier vetiver with a grapefruit lift. Less earthy than Javan.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
