Ether
Ether by Xerjoff is an unisex eau de parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with lemon, sweet orange, bergamot, bulgarian rose, mandarin and cumin, moves into gurjun balsam, cypriol, lavender, benzoin, pine and clary sage and dries down to oud, sandalwood, musk, vanilla and caramel. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Sweet Orange Juicy and cheerful. The friendliest citrus there is.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Bulgarian Rose Fresh, dewy and green. The 'real rose garden' version.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
Heart
- Gurjun Balsam A woody resin from Southeast Asia. Smooth, faintly peppery, and it helps a scent last.
- Cypriol Also called nagarmotha. Smoky, leathery, earthy — a vetiver relative.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Pine Sappy and bracing. Straightforwardly outdoorsy.
- Clary Sage Softer, sweeter sage with an ambery undertone. Warm and herbal.
Dry-down
- Oud Resinous, medicinal, barnyard-adjacent wood. The most expensive note in perfumery.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Caramel Burnt sugar. Rich, sticky and unapologetically sweet.
