Oceania
Oceania by Roja Parfums is an unisex parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, lime, mandarin and litsea cubeba, moves into geranium, jasmine, ylang-ylang, violet and sambac jasmine and dries down to galbanum, oakmoss, vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood and benzoin. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Lime Sharper and greener than lemon. Reads a bit tropical, a bit barbershop.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Litsea Cubeba Also called May Chang. Sharp, lemon-sherbet brightness from a small peppery berry.
Heart
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Sambac Jasmine Greener, more tea-like jasmine. Less indolic than grandiflorum.
Dry-down
- Galbanum Intensely green resin. Smells like snapping a plant stem in half.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
