White Linen
White Linen by Estée Lauder is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1978 in the designer price tier. It opens with aldehydes, bergamot, lemon and orange blossom, moves into rose, jasmine, lilac and ylang-ylang and dries down to oakmoss, musk, benzoin, amber and sandalwood. Expect around 9 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
Heart
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Lilac Cool, powdery spring floral. Nostalgic and slightly soapy.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
