Tropical Wood
Tropical Wood by Montale is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, lemon, passionfruit, pineapple and oud, moves into rose, jasmine, violet, saffron and patchouli and dries down to sandalwood, leather, vanilla and white musk. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Passionfruit Sharp, tropical and slightly sulphurous. Vivid and modern.
- Pineapple Tangy, boozy and tropical. Loud and hard to hide.
- Oud Resinous, medicinal, barnyard-adjacent wood. The most expensive note in perfumery.
Heart
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Saffron Leathery, medicinal and slightly metallic. The signature of modern niche.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
