Attar
Attar by Montale is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with saffron, ylang-ylang, lemon and leather, moves into rose, geranium and jasmine and dries down to sandalwood, patchouli, amber and white musk. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Saffron Leathery, medicinal and slightly metallic. The signature of modern niche.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
Heart
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
