Sweet Peony

Sweet Peony by Montale is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, mandarin, coffee, cinnamon, peach and apple, moves into peony, violet, jasmine, rose and patchouli and dries down to white musk, amber, sandalwood and vanilla. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.

Opening

Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
Coffee Roasted, bitter and dark. Adds edge to sweet fragrances.
Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
Peach Fuzzy, warm and slightly creamy. Soft rather than sharp.
Apple Crunchy and tart or soft and red, depending on the treatment.

Heart

Peony Pink, watery and slightly peppery. Modern and inoffensive.
Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.

Dry-down

White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
