Aqua Gold
Aqua Gold by Montale is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with lemon, grapefruit, lavender, ginger, black pepper and pink pepper, moves into orange blossom, violet, jasmine, vetiver, cedarwood and patchouli and dries down to white musk, leather, amber, oakmoss and sandalwood. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
Heart
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
Dry-down
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
