Red Vetiver
Red Vetiver by Montale is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, sweet orange, black pepper and geranium, moves into patchouli, rose and jasmine and dries down to oakmoss, cedarwood, vetiver and white musk. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Sweet Orange Juicy and cheerful. The friendliest citrus there is.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
Heart
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
