Hyrax

Hyrax by Zoologist is an unisex extrait de parfum from 2018 in the niche price tier. It opens with elemi, pink pepper, saffron and rose, moves into hyraceum, hyacinth, styrax and whiskey and dries down to benzoin, castoreum, civet, patchouli, sandalwood and tonka bean. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.

Opening

Elemi Peppery resin with a lemon-pine lift. Bright and dry.
Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
Saffron Leathery, medicinal and slightly metallic. The signature of modern niche.
Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.

Heart

Hyraceum Fermented, earthy and deep. Surprisingly rounded once diluted.
Hyacinth Cold, green, watery floral. Smells like early spring.
Styrax Smoky, leathery balsam. Slightly rubbery and dark.
Whiskey Boozy, oaky, a little smoky. Warmth you can almost taste.

Dry-down

Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
Castoreum Leathery, smoky and warm. Adds depth and a bit of danger.
Civet Sharp, faecal and intense on its own. In trace amounts it makes florals glow.
Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
