Dragonfly
Dragonfly by Zoologist is an unisex extrait de parfum from 2021 in the niche price tier. It opens with grapefruit, basil, angelica and ginger, moves into geranium, sambac jasmine, mimosa, orris root, rose and violet leaf and dries down to rain accord, oakmoss, patchouli, tonka bean, vetiver and cashmeran. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Angelica Musky, herbal root. Earthy and a bit strange.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
Heart
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Sambac Jasmine Greener, more tea-like jasmine. Less indolic than grandiflorum.
- Mimosa Soft, powdery, honeyed yellow flower. Gentle and comforting.
- Orris Root Iris root aged for years. Buttery, powdery, unmistakably refined.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Violet Leaf Crisp, watery green with a metallic edge. Cool rather than fresh.
Dry-down
- Rain Accord Wet pavement and clean air. Comforting in a way that's hard to explain.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Cashmeran Musky, woody and slightly spicy. Velvety and very persistent.
