Modoc
Modoc by Xerjoff is an unisex eau de parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with artemisia, basil, bergamot, coriander, grapefruit and lemon, moves into iris, lavender, orange blossom, bay leaf, pine and rose and dries down to amber, sandalwood, musk, patchouli, vanilla and vetiver. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Artemisia Bitter and silvery-herbal. Wormwood, the backbone of a fougère.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
Heart
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Bay Leaf Warm, aromatic and slightly sweet. The backbone of classic barbershop scents.
- Pine Sappy and bracing. Straightforwardly outdoorsy.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
