Muscs Koublaï Khän
Muscs Koublaï Khän by Serge Lutens is an unisex eau de parfum from 1998 in the luxury price tier. It opens with cumin and coriander, moves into costus, deer musk and rose and dries down to castoreum, hyraceum and labdanum. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
Heart
- Costus Smells like unwashed hair and warm skin. Deeply strange.
- Deer Musk The original animal musk. Now synthetic — warm, dirty and powdery.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Castoreum Leathery, smoky and warm. Adds depth and a bit of danger.
- Hyraceum Fermented, earthy and deep. Surprisingly rounded once diluted.
- Labdanum Sticky, leathery resin. Dark honey and old books.
