Antaeus
Antaeus by Chanel is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1981 in the premium price tier. It opens with lemon, bergamot and coriander, moves into jasmine, clove and labdanum and dries down to leather, castoreum, oakmoss and patchouli. Expect around 9 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
Heart
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
- Labdanum Sticky, leathery resin. Dark honey and old books.
Dry-down
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Castoreum Leathery, smoky and warm. Adds depth and a bit of danger.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
