Week-end in Normandy
Week-end in Normandy by Parfums de Nicolaï is an unisex eau de parfum in the premium price tier. It opens with bergamot, lemon, galbanum, tarragon, basil and mint, moves into lily of the valley, jasmine and cardamom and dries down to oakmoss, cedarwood, leather and musk. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Galbanum Intensely green resin. Smells like snapping a plant stem in half.
- Tarragon Anise-tinged and green. Adds a herbal lift to barbershop scents.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Mint Cold and tingly. Great in small doses, toothpaste in large ones.
Heart
- Lily of the Valley Clean, green, dewy floral. Reads as 'fresh laundry' to most people.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
