Jungle L'Éléphant
Jungle L'Éléphant by Kenzo is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1996 in the designer price tier. It opens with cardamom, cumin, mandarin and clove, moves into ylang-ylang, licorice, mango, heliotrope and cinnamon and dries down to vanilla, patchouli, amber and tonka bean. Expect around 12 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
Heart
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Licorice Sweet anise with a dark, salty edge. Divisive and distinctive.
- Mango Thick, sweet and tropical. Creamy rather than sharp.
- Heliotrope Almond, vanilla and powder. Smells like marzipan and old-fashioned makeup.
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
