Le Male
Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1995 in the designer price tier. It opens with mint, lavender, bergamot and cardamom, moves into cinnamon, orange blossom and cumin and dries down to vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood and amber. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Mint Cold and tingly. Great in small doses, toothpaste in large ones.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
Heart
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
