Homme
Homme by Joop! is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1989 in the budget price tier. It opens with bergamot, lemon and mandarin, moves into cinnamon, orange blossom, jasmine and heliotrope and dries down to vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood, patchouli and honey. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
Heart
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Heliotrope Almond, vanilla and powder. Smells like marzipan and old-fashioned makeup.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Honey Sweet, waxy and slightly animalic. Can smell dirty in large doses.
