Fidji
Fidji by Guy Laroche is a feminine-leaning eau de toilette from 1966 in the budget price tier. It opens with galbanum, lemon and bergamot, moves into ylang-ylang, jasmine, carnation and iris and dries down to sandalwood, oakmoss, white musk and amber. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Galbanum Intensely green resin. Smells like snapping a plant stem in half.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
Heart
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Carnation Spicy, clove-like floral. Old-school and a bit peppery.
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
