L'Heure Bleue
L'Heure Bleue by Guerlain is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1912 in the premium price tier. It opens with aldehydes, bergamot and anise, moves into carnation, violet and rose and dries down to iris, vanilla, tonka bean and benzoin. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Anise Sweet, liquorice-like seed. Cool and slightly medicinal.
Heart
- Carnation Spicy, clove-like floral. Old-school and a bit peppery.
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
