Grey Flannel
Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1975 in the budget price tier. It opens with galbanum, lemon, bergamot and neroli, moves into violet, iris and rose and dries down to oakmoss, tonka bean, sandalwood and cedarwood. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Galbanum Intensely green resin. Smells like snapping a plant stem in half.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Neroli Distilled orange blossom. Green, soapy and elegant.
Heart
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
