Portrait of a Lady
Portrait of a Lady by Frédéric Malle is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 2010 in the luxury price tier. It opens with raspberry, cinnamon and black pepper, moves into damask rose and clove and dries down to patchouli, incense, sandalwood and musk. Expect around 12 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Raspberry Tart, jammy and slightly fuzzy. Very popular in modern sweet scents.
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
Heart
- Damask Rose The rich, jammy, honeyed rose. Deep and slightly wine-like.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
Dry-down
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Incense Smoky, dry and meditative. Adds gravity to anything.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
