Youth Dew
Youth Dew by Estée Lauder is a feminine-leaning parfum from 1953 in the designer price tier. It opens with aldehydes, orange blossom and bergamot, moves into cinnamon, clove, rose and ylang-ylang and dries down to patchouli, vanilla, incense and oakmoss. Expect around 12 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
Heart
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
Dry-down
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Incense Smoky, dry and meditative. Adds gravity to anything.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
