Joy by Dior is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 2018 in the designer price tier. It opens with bergamot, mandarin and petitgrain, moves into rose and jasmine and dries down to sandalwood, white musk and amberwood. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.

Opening

• Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
• Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
• Petitgrain Bitter twigs and leaves of the orange tree. Dry and a little green.

Heart

• Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
• Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.

Dry-down

• Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
• White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
• Amberwood Dry synthetic warmth, sharper than amber. Everywhere in modern masculines.
