Woody fragrances
Dry cedar, sandalwood, vetiver. Grown-up and grounding.
What they smell like
- Aetoxylon A rare Indonesian wood with an oud-like depth, but smoother and without the barnyard edge.
- Akigalawood Patchouli with the earth taken out. Peppery, lightly spiced dry wood that makes a base feel expensive.
- Amberwood Dry synthetic warmth, sharper than amber. Everywhere in modern masculines.
- Amyris Soft, sweet, sandalwood-adjacent. Often stands in for the real thing.
- Atlas Cedar Smoother, resinous cedar. Warmer than the Virginia type.
- Birch Clean pale wood. The leaves, not the tar.
- Cabreuva A soft Brazilian wood oil. Gently floral, like fresh-planed timber.
- Cashmere Wood Soft, fuzzy, slightly musky wood. Adds a blurred warmth.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Cypress Cool, green, resinous conifer. Sharp and clean.
- Cypriol Also called nagarmotha. Smoky, leathery, earthy — a vetiver relative.
- Driftwood Salt-bleached and dry. Wood that has been in the sea.
- Ebony Dense, dry and dark. Wood with no sweetness to it.
- Georgywood A lab-made wood with a velvety, ambery hum. A close cousin of Iso E Super.
- Guaiac Wood Smoky, tarry and slightly sweet. Like a bonfire and roses.
- Haitian Vetiver Cleaner, smokier vetiver with a grapefruit lift. Less earthy than Javan.
- Hemlock Dark, damp conifer needles. Softer and greener than pine, like a forest after rain.
- Hinoki Japanese cypress. Lemony, calm and spa-like.
- Iso E Super Velvety, transparent wood that fades in and out. Half the market runs on it.
- Mysore Sandalwood The legendary Indian sandalwood. Richer and butterier than any substitute.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Oakwood Dry, toasty barrel wood. Closer to a whisky cask than a forest.
- Olive Wood Pale, smooth Mediterranean wood. Dry, a little milky, faintly sweet.
- Oud Resinous, medicinal, barnyard-adjacent wood. The most expensive note in perfumery.
- Palo Santo Sweet, resinous holy wood. Smoky with a citrus lift.
- Papyrus Dry, smoky, papery wood. Vetiver's quieter cousin.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Pine Sappy and bracing. Straightforwardly outdoorsy.
- Rosewood Soft, rosy wood. Gentle and slightly floral.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Sequoia Tall, resinous, slightly balsamic wood. Airy for a woody note.
- Teakwood Warm, dry and slightly smoky. Furniture-shop woodiness.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Virginia Cedarwood The pencil-shaving one specifically. Dry, sharp and slightly sweet.
