Tom Ford for Men
Tom Ford for Men by Tom Ford is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 2007 in the premium price tier. It opens with mandarin, bergamot, ginger and basil, moves into tobacco leaf, violet leaf, black pepper and orange blossom and dries down to amber, vetiver, patchouli, leather and oakmoss. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
Heart
- Tobacco Leaf Greener and drier than cured tobacco. Hay-like.
- Violet Leaf Crisp, watery green with a metallic edge. Cool rather than fresh.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
Dry-down
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
