Riviera Verbena
Riviera Verbena by Parfums de Nicolaï is an unisex eau de parfum in the premium price tier. It opens with petitgrain, lemon, spearmint, thyme, cut grass and blackcurrant, moves into lemon verbena, calone, jasmine and rose and dries down to vetiver, patchouli and white musk. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Petitgrain Bitter twigs and leaves of the orange tree. Dry and a little green.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Spearmint Softer, sweeter mint. Less medicinal than peppermint.
- Thyme Dry, sharp kitchen herb. Bracing and slightly antiseptic.
- Cut Grass Exactly what it says. Sharp, wet and nostalgic.
- Blackcurrant Tart, dark and slightly catty. Adds bite to florals.
Heart
- Lemon Verbena Lemon crossed with crushed herbs. Smells like expensive soap.
- Calone The melon-and-ocean molecule behind every 90s aquatic. Instantly dates a scent.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
