Bois Bélize
Bois Bélize by Parfums de Nicolaï is an unisex eau de parfum in the premium price tier. It opens with bergamot, osmanthus and ambrette seed, moves into rose, cardamom and clove and dries down to guaiac wood, patchouli, mate, vetiver, oakmoss and musk. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Osmanthus Apricot-and-leather floral. Unusual, warm and very wearable.
- Ambrette Seed The only natural musk. Pear-like, warm and slightly boozy.
Heart
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
Dry-down
- Guaiac Wood Smoky, tarry and slightly sweet. Like a bonfire and roses.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Mate Dry, smoky, bitter green tea. Toasted rather than fresh.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
