Santal Wood
Santal Wood by Montale is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, black pepper and lavender, moves into geranium, nutmeg, cardamom, incense and patchouli and dries down to sandalwood, cedarwood, amber, musk and tonka bean. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
Heart
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Incense Smoky, dry and meditative. Adds gravity to anything.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
