Tokyo
Tokyo by Gallivant is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, yuzu, black pepper and cardamom, moves into hinoki, cedarwood, incense, orris root, rose and nutmeg and dries down to amber, sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Yuzu Japanese citrus — like grapefruit and mandarin crossed. Crisp and clean.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
Heart
- Hinoki Japanese cypress. Lemony, calm and spa-like.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Incense Smoky, dry and meditative. Adds gravity to anything.
- Orris Root Iris root aged for years. Buttery, powdery, unmistakably refined.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
Dry-down
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
