Etruscan Water
Etruscan Water by Francesca Bianchi is an unisex extrait de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, mandarin, grapefruit, petitgrain, basil and caraway, moves into immortelle, jasmine and orris root and dries down to musk, ambergris, labdanum, vetiver and oakmoss. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Petitgrain Bitter twigs and leaves of the orange tree. Dry and a little green.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Caraway Warm, seedy and slightly aniseed. Rye bread in a bottle.
Heart
- Immortelle Maple syrup, curry and hay. Genuinely strange and very distinctive.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Orris Root Iris root aged for years. Buttery, powdery, unmistakably refined.
Dry-down
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Ambergris Salty, animal, sun-warmed skin. Marine and musky at once.
- Labdanum Sticky, leathery resin. Dark honey and old books.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
