The Architects Club
The Architects Club by Arquiste is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with juniper berry, angelica, bitter orange, lemon, bergamot and clary sage, moves into pink pepper, cardamom, coriander, blackcurrant and iris and dries down to oakwood, cedarwood, cypriol, haitian vetiver, vanilla and amberwood. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Juniper Berry Gin, basically. Piney, dry and bracing.
- Angelica Musky, herbal root. Earthy and a bit strange.
- Bitter Orange Marmalade without the sugar. Sour and slightly medicinal.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Clary Sage Softer, sweeter sage with an ambery undertone. Warm and herbal.
Heart
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
- Blackcurrant Tart, dark and slightly catty. Adds bite to florals.
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
Dry-down
- Oakwood Dry, toasty barrel wood. Closer to a whisky cask than a forest.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Cypriol Also called nagarmotha. Smoky, leathery, earthy — a vetiver relative.
- Haitian Vetiver Cleaner, smokier vetiver with a grapefruit lift. Less earthy than Javan.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Amberwood Dry synthetic warmth, sharper than amber. Everywhere in modern masculines.
