Gold Man
Gold Man by Amouage is a masculine-leaning eau de parfum from 1983 in the luxury price tier. It opens with rose, lily of the valley and orris root, moves into frankincense, myrrh, jasmine and cedarwood and dries down to sandalwood, musk, civet and amber. Expect around 12 hours of wear, and it projects very strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Lily of the Valley Clean, green, dewy floral. Reads as 'fresh laundry' to most people.
- Orris Root Iris root aged for years. Buttery, powdery, unmistakably refined.
Heart
- Frankincense Bright, peppery, church-like resin. Lifts and cools a fragrance.
- Myrrh Bitter, smoky resin. Ancient-smelling and slightly cool.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Civet Sharp, faecal and intense on its own. In trace amounts it makes florals glow.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
