Epic Man
Epic Man by Amouage is a masculine-leaning eau de parfum from 2009 in the luxury price tier. It opens with pink pepper, cumin, nutmeg and bergamot, moves into oud, frankincense, geranium and rose and dries down to sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli, myrrh and musk. Expect around 11 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
Heart
- Oud Resinous, medicinal, barnyard-adjacent wood. The most expensive note in perfumery.
- Frankincense Bright, peppery, church-like resin. Lifts and cools a fragrance.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Myrrh Bitter, smoky resin. Ancient-smelling and slightly cool.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
