Chameleon
Chameleon by Zoologist is an unisex eau de parfum in the niche price tier. It opens with bergamot, lemon, ylang-ylang, mango, pink pepper and starfruit, moves into cashmeran, clove, coconut, frangipani, jasmine and saffron and dries down to amber, musk, opoponax, patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Mango Thick, sweet and tropical. Creamy rather than sharp.
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
- Starfruit Watery, green-tart tropical fruit. Common in nineties aquatics.
Heart
- Cashmeran Musky, woody and slightly spicy. Velvety and very persistent.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
- Coconut Creamy and tropical. Suncream in the best possible way.
- Frangipani Creamy tropical floral. Suncream adjacent.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Saffron Leathery, medicinal and slightly metallic. The signature of modern niche.
Dry-down
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Opoponax Sweet myrrh. Balsamic, warm and slightly medicinal.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
