L'Homme
L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 2006 in the designer price tier. It opens with bergamot, ginger and lemon, moves into violet leaf, basil and black pepper and dries down to tonka bean, cedarwood, vetiver and white musk. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
Heart
- Violet Leaf Crisp, watery green with a metallic edge. Cool rather than fresh.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
Dry-down
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
