Noir
Noir by Tom Ford is a masculine-leaning eau de parfum from 2012 in the premium price tier. It opens with bergamot, violet and pink pepper, moves into iris, nutmeg, clary sage and black pepper and dries down to vanilla, amber, patchouli and leather. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Violet Powdery, sweet and a bit retro. Parma Violets in flower form.
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
Heart
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
- Clary Sage Softer, sweeter sage with an ambery undertone. Warm and herbal.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
